Frequently Asked Questions About Home Health Care

What is Home Health Care?

Home health care refers to a wide variety of medical and non-medical support services provided for you in your home. The medical services can range from skilled nursing to mental health services. The non-medical support services can range from assistance with activities of daily living (ADL) to companionship. The services can meet a short-term need while you recover from a surgery or receive rehabilitation for an injury. The services can also be part of a long-term care plan to meet your needs related to a permanent disability, chronic illness or the effects of aging. Home health care services are custom tailored to meet your unique needs, living situation and preferences.

Centric Healthcare’s services can be offered in communal residential settings like an assisted living center, nursing home or a rehabilitation facility. However, most people who use our services prefer the option of providing care services in the privacy and comfort of their home.

The vast majority of people who use home health care services are elderly. However, these services can benefit people of any age, babies and seniors alike. Regardless of how old you are, many of you and your families can benefit from in-home care services. You can benefit from home health care if you:

  • Recently left the hospital after an illness or surgery and need help while you recover
  • Suffered a traumatic injury that needs rehabilitation
  • have a chronic disease or health condition that needs ongoing treatment and management
  • Lost your ability, for any reason, to move or perform activities of daily living (the loss can be either temporary or permanent)

How to Qualify for Home Health Care

Qualifying for home health care services will depend on how you plan to pay for those services. There are many payment options including Medicare, Medicaid, veteran’s benefits, long-term care insurance, private health insurance, private pay and a variety of other less common payment sources. Each payment source will have specific eligibility criteria you must meet in order to qualify for home health care services.

Generally, in order to qualify for home health care services, you must meet these conditions:

  • You have a doctor’s order determining that you need medical care in your home.
  • You require at least one of the following:
  • Your doctor has certified that you are homebound.*
  • Your doctor regularly reviews and signs your plan of care.

* For the purpose of qualifying for home health care services, “homebound” does not mean that you are forbidden or physically unable to leave your home. In this context, “homebound” means that leaving your home requires the assistance of others or medical equipment and poses a safety risk to you, or that leaving your home requires a level of effort that is exhausting and overwhelming.

Does Medicare Cover Home Health Care?

Medicare is the most common source of payment for home health care services. Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and/or Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) cover eligible home health care services that include:

Medicare does not cover:

  • 24-hour-a-day care at home
  • Meals delivered to your home
  • Homemaker services
  • Custodial or personal care (like bathing, dressing or toileting), when this is the only care you need

If you have Part A and/or Part B, and you meet all of the following conditions, you are covered:

  • You are under the care of a doctor, and you are receiving services under a plan of care that is created and reviewed regularly by a doctor.
  • Your doctor has certified that you need, one or more of these services:*
    • Intermittent skilled nursing care (other than drawing blood)
    • Physical therapy
    • Speech therapy
    • Occupational therapy
  • Your doctor has certified that you’re homebound.**

*These services are covered only when the services are specific, safe and an effective treatment for your condition. The amount, frequency and time period of the services needs to be reasonable, and they need to be complex or only qualified therapists can do them safely and effectively.

**You may leave home for medical treatment or short, infrequent absences for non-medical reasons, like medical appointments or attending religious services. You can still get home health care if you attend adult day care.
